First Coat Intl’ Art Festival was initiated in response to the social and cultural needs of Toowoomba. Founded in 2013, Australian artist and curator team, Ian McCallum and Grace Dewar (formerly under the banner of Toowoomba based creative space, Kontraband Studios) partnered with Toowoomba Regional Council to present a three-day mural festival.

Over a four year period, First Coat Festival facilitated over 100 murals in Toowoomba, pushing the regional inland city to the forefront of Australian arts and culture. Through the annual festival model and the full time delivery of local creative. A firm believer that public art drives conversation and connects communities, First Coat is now collaborating on public art projects across Queensland; taking the Australian cultural landscape by storm.
